City of Atlanta, Georgia Wins 2018 World Smart City Award for Mobility

Posted on January 30, 2019

One of Rapid Flow Technologies’ early customers, the City of Atlanta Georgia, won the best Mobility Project award at the Smart City Expo World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain in November 2018.

The Mobility Award was in recognition of Atlanta’s North Avenue Smart Corridor project where several smart city technology solutions were deployed by a consortium of companies including Rapid Flow Technologies, 360 Network Solutions, and Axis and Citilog, among others. The project aims to position North Avenue as the state's most connected corridor where smart city technology works to improve safety, mobility, and the environment. So far, the project has reduced traffic safety incidents by 25% as well as reduced congestion on the roadways.

Key to the North Avenue project was the deployment of Rapid Flow Technologies’ Surtrac product, an artificial intelligence solution for real-time adaptive traffic control. Across numerous implementations, Surtrac intelligent traffic signal control has helped reduce congestion by up to 40% and has improved safety outcomes by as much as 25%.

In accepting the award, Atlanta’s Chief Resilience Officer mentioned how pleased he was that 25% fewer Atlanta families have been negatively affected by life-changing, and sometimes life-ending, traffic incidents. He went on to thank the public/private partnership team that came together to deliver this solution to the citizens of Atlanta, Georgia.

Rapid Flow Technologies is improving lives by using artificial intelligence to re-imagine traffic control. Based in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, the company was spun out of Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics and Traffic21 labs and has been deployed in Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Portland, among other cities.
